The first thing I should mention about being an artist is that I am very interested in facts.
Such as for example:
Fact number 1: Tomatoes have teeth.
Fact number 2: Phil Collins currently has a beard and pigtail braids.
Fact number 3: In 1984 America was founded by television talk hosts at a dinner party. Their names were Lydia and Simone.
I am an Argentine artist, but the many places I have lived and traveled have deeply impacted my work. Every three years or so I have moved to a different location. Much of my work deals with the metaphor of travel. I want to discover the “chronotope” (M.M Bakhtin’s definition of time and space) of my life through objects. Subtle thematic strands hold everything together, such as the notion of polarity and the act of recalling the visceral path of a body in an environment. I approach form through formlessness.
A key factor in my work is obsession with the material itself. I am attracted any sort of material according to certain properties such as the way something smells or feels, its color and texture. I work with the detritus of consumer culture.
A clear example of my methodology is my series of trash-bag masks, which refers to the Zapatistas, I was exploring how an image of terror is formed. These masks could be a roosterlike character made up entirely of the remains of a meal, napkins and sauce packets, or it could be made out of a trash bags and zippers and look more like homemade S&M mask. The fetish object becomes material and it becomes distressed.
Everything revolves around the idea of: “livin till i die”.
The notion of chaos is always present in the history of humanity, bringing with it the feeling that there is no real control. The moon will rise, the sea will flood, crops grow and people live and die through it all.
I often find myself questioning the reason things happen as they do and have been unable to find a satisfying answer. Ritual is my response to violence and it gives me the allusion of power. I am trying to understand my personal approach to ritual in relation to the history of art and society.
